Harry Potter Walking Tour
Perhaps surprisingly, Oxford was actually used as a major filming location for Hogwarts, in the Harry Potter series. If you’re a fan, or just keen on discovering a few of the places that defined the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and walk in the footsteps of Harry, Hermione and Ron along the same mysterious hallways. We will visit the Bodleian Library, which appeared as Hogwarts Infirmary in “Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone”, New College Cloisters, where Harry confronted Malfoy, and where he was then turned into a ferret by Mad-Eye Moody, and other recognizable places. New College
New College was founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham. The full name of the college is St Mary’s College of Winchester in Oxford. Its current name dates from soon after its completion, in 1386, to distinguish it from the older college of St Mary, which is now known as Oriel College. The Cloisters of New College appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire quite a few times, many of the corridor scenes within the film are shot here. Scenes filmed here include the one in which Harry has to push his way through all the Gryffyndor students, who are all wearing the, “Potter Stinks” badges, to go and have a word with Cedric. Bodleian Library
Perhaps the most memorable scene is in The “Philosopher’s” Stone, when Harry uses his Cloak of Invisibility to sneak into the restricted section of the Hogwarts library. We see Harry creeping around here, before he is given away by a screaming book. Find out more on our tour.
The Divinity School
This is a beautiful example of Medieval architecture, and it is famed for its intricate ceiling patterns and tall, airy windows. It was used in the first four Harry Potter movies, providing the setting for the Hogwarts Hospital Wing. For example, it is here where Harry first wakes up at the end of “The Philosopher’s Stone”, after having had his first fight with Voldemort. Find out more on our tour.
Turf Tavern
The cast and crew of the Harry Potter movies also came here often, when the nearby colleges were used as filming locations. This pub has also featured in the Inspector Morse television series. The Bridge of Sighs
According to legend, the college once closed this bridge to overweight students, forcing them to get some exercise by taking the long route from one building to another. Easy to spot behind Oxford’s very own Bridge of Sighs, is the giant Oak Tree that featured during a duel between Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which is located in New College “Cloisters”. Christ Church College
It is the most popular college in Oxford for tourists, with almost half a million visitors annually. The Great Dining Hall was the inspiration for Hogwarts Great Hall, though no filming actually took place here. The most famous spots actually used in the films is the grand stone staircase, located inside the “Bodley” Tower. It is used in the first two Harry Potter movies. Scenes filmed include Harry’s first day at Hogwarts; a flashback sequence between Tom Riddle and Dumbledore; and a scene near the end of the first film, where Harry is reunited with Ron and Hermione, after being released from Hogwarts.
