Our Historic Pub Walk is the ideal way to do a Bristol Pub Crawl

Please find below the highlights of our Bristol Historic Pub Tour

The Hole in the Wall

The Hole in the Wall Pub was established in the 18th Century, and was named after a spy hole that enabled sailors to look out for navy “press” gangs, and customs agents. Situated on the edge of the harbour, it was a prime location for the navy to find, and forcibly recruit, new sailors., who would wake up from a drunken night out to find themselves at sea. Find out more on our tour.

The King William dates from 1670, and stands in a row of 17th Century gabled buildings, that was originally three houses. When it was built it was as a refuge, for the poor women of Bristol. Nearby is another pub, The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, which is also popular on pub crawls. The King Street entrance includes an 17th Century door frame, along with an 18th Century shop front. The pub also features some old stone fireplaces. Find out more on our tour.

The King William III

The Old Duke

The Old Duke is a world famous Blues and Jazz club. It features traditional live Jazz every night, where admission is free. Every year it holds a jazz festival. Its name is thought to be a homage, to the legendary jazz musician, Duke Ellington, though it has had the same name all its life, and may actually have been originally referring to the Duke of Cumberland. Find out more on our tour.

The Llandoger Trow

Legend has it that this pub, built in 1664, was the inspiration for the Admiral Benbow Inn, in the book “Treasure Island”, by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is also where Daniel Defoe met his inspiration for “Robinson Crusoe”. Originally it was part of a set of houses, when it was bought by a Welsh sailor, known as Captain Hawkins, who named the pub after the Welsh village of “Llandogo”. The pub is also known to have been visited by the famous pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. Find out more on our tour.

The Old Fishmarket Pub

The Old Fish Market was a recent winner of the Best City Pub category, in Fuller’s Pub of the Year competition. It beat two venues in London to the title, among the brewing company’s pubs across the UK. The pub, which is furnished in oak, is renowned for its pub grub and shows live sporting events, and music. The drinks list is impressive, ranging from keg beers, to cocktails and whisky, and it is a definite must visit location, on a pub crawl.

The Rummer Pub

The Rummer pub is in a building that dates from the 1740’s. It was once the destination of the stagecoach from London, a journey that took 38 hours. Famous visitors include William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The pub was reopened, after being refurbished in 2005, as a cocktail bar style restaurant, with a wide selection of gins, and wines, to suit all tastes. Find out more on our tour.

The Bank Tavern

The Bank Tavern has been here since the 1800’s. It has survived a surprising number of riots in the area, as well as two world wars. It is an independent free house, so it has an unusual selection of beers and ciders. In fact, they hold festivals for both beer, and cider, throughout the year. They are also famous for their food. Their Sunday roast dinner is famous locally, winning the award for Bristols Best Sunday Lunch, at the Observer Food Monthly Awards, as well as Bristol Good Food Awards. This means it is extremely popular, and you would definitely have to book to sample it.

The Gryphon

The Gryphon, opened in 2010, is an unusual, tiny, and triangular, corner pub. It is known for its dark and strong beers, and as a venue for great rock, and heavy metal bands. It has a constantly updating stream of new beers, flowing from its four hand pumps. Beer festivals are held here in May and September. The Gryphon has been listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, every year since 2011. There tends to be discounts on the beers from Monday to Thursday. Find out more on our  tour.

The Hatchet Inn

The Hatchet Inn is thought to be the oldest pub in Bristol, still operating as a pub. The building dates from 1606, and it is a Grade 2 listed building. Over the years it has been used for many types of blood sports, including bare knuckle fighting, and cock fighting. It has also been a brothel. Blackbeard the pirate, who was born in Bristol, is also known to have come here to drink. The big front door is said to have human skin beneath the paint as, apparently, the skin leather from executed criminals was used for binding books, and, in this case, for strengthening doors. Find out more on our tour.

The Shakespeare

The Shakespeare Pub was originally built in 1725, and became a pub in 1777. It was used extensively by the dock workers from the nearby port. It is a grade 2 listed building. It is thought to have the longest continuous ale licence in Bristol. There are seven hand pumps which provide two regular beers plus four or five constantly rotating guests from well known breweries. There are seasonal beer related events held here which are hosted by local breweries, as well as a popular October beer festival. Find out more on our tour.
