Tour the beautiful and historic Liverpool docks on our walking tour

The docks in Liverpool are the reason the city is here. They were the reason the city became wealthy and important during the 17th and 18th centuries, and why it was part of Britain’s lifeline during the second world war. This walk takes you to some of the oldest docks along with museums, monuments and buildings that allow us to tell you the story of the vital contribution the docks have been to the life of the city. Happy sightseeing.

Discover the amazing and historic docks of Liverpool

Museums, Galleries, Monuments and Spectacular sights on our Liverpool Docks Walking Tour

Albert Dock

Albert Dock is the largest collection of Grade 1Listed Buildings in the country. It was opened by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, in 1846. It was the first structure to be built using cast iron, brick and stone, which made it non-flammable, in Britain. When it was built it was considered revolutionary, because ships could be loaded and unloaded directly into the warehouses. The buildings were not meant to be aesthetically pleasing, they were working buildings, for storing the goods that flowed into the city, from the harbour. The harbour is the reason Liverpool came into existence. The buildings have massive Tuscan columns and heavy rounded arches. Find out more on our tour

Salthouse Dock

This dock is older than the Albert Dock and is in fact, the oldest complete dock in the system. It was originally built to serve the salt works, once a major employer in the city. It sent ships to Ireland and Scotland and they returned with cargoes of pickled herrings, cow hides, and beer. Find out more on our tour.

Albert Dock Leisure Complex

Inside the leisure complex you will find an impressive range of retail and leisure offerings, including the Tate Liverpool Gallery, and the Beatles Story Museum, which we cover on our Beatles Walk, and a large selection of restaurants, bars and café’s, to suit every possible taste. On the retail side there is a wide variety of clothes and accessories shops, as well as artwork and homeware, and a wide selection of souvenirs of Liverpool. Its an experience not to be missed. Find out more on our tour.

Duke Dock

Duke Dock is the only private dock in the system, and was originally built for the Duke of Bridgewater’s cotton and grain ships, in 1773. Now it is very quiet, and a popular, if illegal, place for boys to swim in hot weather. As you look out across the water you will see the church spires, and the cranes, of Birkenhead, as well as the River Mersey running out towards the Irish sea. Find out more on our tour.

Pier Masters House Museum

The Pier Masters House was once the home of the pier master, and his family, in the 19th Century. The pier master was the man responsible for ensuring the ships had a safe passage, in and out of the port. It is now a free museum, and showcases rooms with World War 2 interiors. Find out more on our tour.

Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum explores the strong connection Liverpool has to the sea, and includes exclusive collections. One of the most notable is the Titanic Collection. The owners of the Titanic were the White Star Line, and they were based in Liverpool, so the ship carried the name of the city on its stern. Another collection centres around the Lusitania, the passenger ship sunk by a German U Boat, without warning, in 1915 during the First World War. She sank in under 20 minutes, with the loss of 1191 passengers and crew. Find out more on our tour.

Canning Dock

The Dock, opposite the entrance to the Maritime Museum, is Canning Dock. This dock was developed as a dry dock, from the tidal basin of the old dock, and some of its stonework dates from 1737. It was named after the Liverpool MP George Canning. It would, initially, have served ships taking part in the trans-atlantic slave trade. Find out more on our tour

Museum of Liverpool

One of the key places to visit, for any tourist wanting to discover what Liverpool is all about is the Museum of Liverpool, which opened in this purpose built building in 2011. It has collections to suit every taste including, the archeology of the region, social and community history, the land transport used in the area, including a full-size exhibit of the, now disappeared, Liverpool overhead railway. The railway was once the first electric elevated railway in the world. Find out more on our tour

Titanic Memorial

This monument is dedicated to those who gave their lives, below decks, in the service of their ship, passengers, crewmen and Country. It was originally commissioned in 1912 by the White Star Line, to remember the 35 engineers who remained working at their posts, maintaining the boilers, and keeping the power on in the ship for as long as possible. They continued until the Titanic broke in half, and sank beneath the waves, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Further disasters such as the Lusitania, and the deaths of many crews during the world wars, have given this memorial a broader meaning. When it was erected, it was regarded as one of the first ever monuments in the country, dedicated to ordinary working men. Find out more on our tour.

Royal Liver Building

The Liver Building is the iconic symbol of Liverpool. It is a Grade 1 listed building, on Liverpool’s Pier Head. Built in 1850 it was once the home of the Royal Liver Assurance Group, when it was also one of the tallest buildings in the country. It was one of the first buildings in the world to be built of reinforced concrete. On top of its two towers are the famous Liver Birds, who watch over the city, and the port. There is a legend that, if the birds were to ever fly away, the city would cease to exist. Find out more on our tour.

The Cunard Building

This is the Cunard Building constructed during the first world war, and was the headquarters of the Cunard Line until the 1960’s. Today, the building is owned by Liverpool City Council, and is home to several public and private sector organisations, including The British Music Experience, which tells the story of British music through costumes, instruments, performances and memorabilia. You can see outfits worn by such stars as Freddie Mercury, Dusty Springfield, and the Spice Girls. Find out more on our tour.

Port of Liverpool Building

Next to the Cunard Building, and the third “Grace”, is the Port of Liverpool Building. This very grand building can be visited, and you will find, at the main entrance, elaborate gate piers, with bronze dolphins each supporting a globe. When you reach the steps, you will find two giant female figures, classically dressed, which represent Commerce and Industry. Look for the words of Psalm 107, running around the base of the dome, which the harbour board adopted as its motto. Find out more on our tour
