London Covent Garden Ghost Walk

London is full of ghost stories, and Covent Garden is no exception. This walk includes a tour of Londons oldest theatre at Drury Lane. You may also catch a glimpse of the ghost of Admiral Lord Nelson or see the man murdered at the stage door of another theatre, dressed in the clothes of the late 19th Century. See ancient pubs and walk in the footsteps of thieves and murderers, and maybe feel the cold chill of a ghostly presence. Happy ghost hunting.

The long history of the place has meant that it has also generated quite a few ghost stories

There are so many more spots on this Covent Garden tour waiting to give up their scary stories. Let’s jump right into Covent Garden and its ghosts

Revealing the Ghosts of the Covent Garden Tour

Covent Garden Station

On Christmas Eve ,1955, ticket inspector Jack Hayden was writing in the station log, when the door of the office began to rattle. Thinking it might possibly be a drunken reveller, who had got lost, Hayden called out, “there is no way through here”, and then he continued his work. But the rattling only got louder, so, irritated, he got to his feet and opened the door. He found himself facing a tall man in a grey suit and a homburg type hat. The man stared at him without speaking, walked down the staircase, and disappeared into thin air. Find out what happens next on our tour.

Thomas Arne's House

Thomas Arne was born in this house. He was the composer of Rule Britannia and much more. His father was an undertaker and Arne used to practice his violin with his music resting on a coffin. This horrified fellow violinist Michael Festing who said he would never dare to do such a thing in case there was a body inside. Arne smiled opened the coffin and showed him that there was!

Adelphi Theatre - Stage Door

On the 16th December 1897, William Terris, a generous and popular actor and manager, arrived at this stage door, for the evening performance of a play called Secret Service, in which he played the leading role. As he unlocked the door, Richard Prince, an unremarkable actor, who resented Terris his success, rushed out of the shadows and stabbed him. A crowd soon gathered round the dying man, and as he lay in the arms of the play’s leading actress, Jessica Milward, they heard him whisper, “I will be back’. In 1928, a tourist, walking along this same lane, met a figure dressed in old turn of the century clothes. Find out what happens next on our tour.

Rules Restaurant

Rules is thought to be one of Londons oldest restaurants, founded in 1797 by Thomas Rule. Past clients include Charles Dickens, H.G. Wells and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was also a favourite meeting place for Edward VII and his mistress Lillie Langtree, who came so often that a special door was put in, so they could enter and leave unobserved. It also has its own ghost, that haunts the ladies lavatory. Find out more on our tour.

The Nell Gwyn Pub

This tiny, dark, and very atmospheric pub, is one of Covent Gardens best kept secrets. To the left of the bar customers often feel a strange coldness in the air and several men have felt a tap on their back trouser pocket, only to turn around and find nobody there. A medium once told the landlord he could see an old man in a cloth cap standing by the stairs. He sensed that the man was happy with the way the pub was being run. He also sensed that the old man would stop at nothing to drive out those responsible if he ever became unhappy. Find out more on our tour.

Savoy Hotel

The Savoy Hotel stands on the site of John of Gaunts Savoy Palace. The hotel opened in 1889 and is a symbol of wealth and privilege. Carusoe once sang here, and the American actress, Mae West, held conversations with her mothers ghost in one of the bedrooms. In 1898 a rich diamond merchant Joel Woolf held a dinner party at the hotel before his return to South Africa. The dinner was for 13 guests. A comment was made that it was an unlucky number and the first to leave would be the first to die. Woolf dismissed the comment and left. Within two weeks he was shot dead in his office in Johannesburg. Find out more on our tour

Somerset House

Somerset house was originally the Palace of the Protector Somerset. The building dates from 1775. The statue in the courtyard is of George III, or mad King George as he is often referred to now. The statue shows him steering Britannia through the troubled sea. This was also home to various offices of the Admiralty and Lord Nelson, of Trafalgar fame, often came here to receive his orders. On bright summer mornings his glowing feeble form can be seen moving across the courtyard. Find out more on our tour.

Lyceum Theatre

This theatre has enjoyed audiences for over 100 years. In the 1880’s a couple claimed they looked over from their balcony seats to see a severed head, in a womans lap, leering at them from the stalls below. They attempted to talk to the woman after the show, but lost her in the crowd. Some years later the husband was at a house in Yorkshire, and he saw a portrait of a man, and the man looked identical to the severed head. He was told that it was an ancestor of the family, and he was beheaded for treason. Not only that but he once owned the land on which the Lyceum now stands.

Theatre Royal

The Theatre Royal is the oldest working theatre in London, and the current building dates from 1812. But there has been a theatre on this site since 1663. The theatre has several ghosts. The most famous is the man in grey. A ghost that wears a Georgian style wig, a grey riding cloak and a three-cornered hat. He always appears at the beginning of a successful west end play. He  has appeared at The King and I, South Pacific and Oaklahoma. For Miss Saigon he appeared every time there was a change of cast! His identity has long been debated.
