Let’s go on a Ghostly Covent Garden Walking Tour

Revealing the Ghosts of the City of Bath

Beau Nash's House

This building was “Beau Nash’s” house in the 18th Century, and he lived here with his mistresses. His last mistress was Juliana Popjoy, and she was very distraught when he died. Perhaps this is why she has been seen occasionally, in an upstairs room, appearing to diners who were enjoying aperitifs, before dinner. At least one diner has rushed out of the building because a woman in 18th Century dress has appeared next to them. Another female figure has been seen dining alone, who also disappears when approached.

The Theatre Royal

The Theatre Royal is one of Bath’s best loved theatres. The ghosts of the two places are intertwined. The Garricks Head is regarded as the most haunted pub in Bath. There is the ghost of the demented woman whose lover was killed by her husband in the building. She became so hysterical, that she threw herself out of the window. Her screams and weeping are still sometimes heard. In one version of the story, she was an actress at the Theatre, and committed suicide in a long grey dress, and is therefore now known as the “Grey Lady”. When seen, she is always wearing white lace gloves. She sometimes appears in the Garrick Head pub, but she is seen more often in the Theatre Royal. Find out more on our Tour.

13 York Street

13 York Street is known to have three visible, and one audible, ghosts. The first is the ghost of a small boy, who managed to fall into a vat of boiling liquid, and died a horrible death. He is often seen playing with a ball. The next is of a woman, that was lured into the house, and then assaulted and killed. Her corpse was then dragged back into the street, placed in a waiting coach, and rushed away. This macabre scene repeats itself sometimes, with the coachman apparently having no head! Find out more on our Tour.

Bath Abbey Church

Construction on this building was started in 1499, and the site has been used for religious purposes for more than a millennium. Much of that time it was as a Benedictine Monastery. The only strange phenomenon reported, dates from a tourist in the mid 1970’s, who was taking pictures inside the abbey church. When the pictures were developed, two of them showed the image of a ghostly hooded monk. Find out more on our Tour.

The Saracens Head

The Saracens Head pub is a gabled inn, that dates from 1713, making it one of the oldest pubs in Bath. It was once an old “coaching” inn. Charles Dickens is thought to be one of its many customers, when he stayed in Bath in 1835. It also has its own ghost. There is a  Grey Ghost that haunts the pub. You may see it disappearing through locked doors, or, you may even find it sat beside you.

Upper Borough Walls

This street follows the line of the medieval walls of the city. In the 17th Century, it was fashionable to promenade along here. The piece of the old wall you can see here has a sinister reputation, being known as the “groaning walls”. Groaning and wailing has been heard in and around this area. Nearby there is a commemorative plaque that records the deaths of 238 people who died at Bath General Hospital, and are interred near this spot, which may account for the noisy ghosts.

Old King Street

Old King Street became famous in the mid 1980’s. This was when ghostly manifestations started happening, that weren’t there before. The lives of the residents were made unbearable by, what they said were, the ghosts of two men. They were heard stomping around loudly on the floors of upstairs rooms. They constantly rattled doorknobs and handles, and made noises like smashing crockery. They were so troublesome that a séance was held that apparently reached the two men. The medium explained to them the trouble they were causing the living. Find out more on our Tour.

Queens Square

24 Queen Square was once the home of John Wood the Elder, a famous architect who was one of the key contributors to the look of the City of Bath we see today. The house is said to be haunted by a woman called Sylvia, a compulsive gambler, whose husband was killed in an ambush near Pittsburgh, USA, in 1755. She lost todays equivalent of hundreds of thousands of pounds, and was the victim of conmen, who promised her eternal love, and then disappeared with the rest of her money. Having no money, she moved into Woods household, and gave him sex whenever he requested it. Find out more on our Tour.
