The Scottish National Gallery, shown in our image, is home to probably one of the best collections of fine art in the world. It includes masterpieces by Rembrandt, Constable , Turner, Titian and Raphael, to name but a few. The collections also cover the entire history of Scottish painting, with all the major names such as Ramsay, Raeburn, Wilkie and McTaggart represented, so it is definitely worth a visit.
The Royal Scottish Academy promotes contemporary Scottish Art. Apart from a continuous programme of exhibitions it also deals with scholarships, awards and residencies for artists who live and work in Scotland. Both these galleries are situated on what is called “The Mound”, which was created from over two million cartloads of soil dug from the foundations of the New Town.
This is the home of Alexander Graham Bell, the 19th Century inventor of the telephone. You will see a plaque by the door. He eventually moved to the United States where he taught deaf children by day and experimented with telecommunications at night. The first ever telephone call was to his assistant where he said “Come here Mr Watson, I want to see you.”
The Georgian House is a tourist attraction which is open to the public. It is designed to take you back in time, as the house is exactly as was when it was first occupied in the 18th Century. Next door to it, on the right, is Bute House which is the official residence of the first minister of the Scottish Parliament.
Robert Louis Stevenson , the author of Kidnapped and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde lived here between 1856 and1880. He was a very sickly child and spent a lot of his time in bed. His bedroom window is the one above the frontndoor. At that time the streets were lit by gas lamps, and lit by a lamplighter which in Edinburgh was known as a “Leerie”. Young Robert would have seen the “Leerie” often, and it inspired his poem The Lamplighter. Find out more on our tour.
The galleries here explore different aspects of the story of Scotland and her people. Portraits include famous historical figures such as Mary Queen of Scots, Prince Charles Stuart, and Robert Burns. The displays change on a regular basis
This is the Melville Monument. The column is 50 meters high and the figure is of Henry Dundas 1st Viscount Melville. Henry was a lawyer and the trusted aid of British Prime Minister William Pitt, he was the most powerful man in Scotland in the last decades of the 18th Century. His nickname was “King Harry the Ninth the uncrowned King of Scotland” in a period when no British monarch ever visited Scotland. Find out more on our tour.
St Andrews church is unusual in that it is entirely round. Apparently the idea behind it was that if there were no corners the devil had nowhere to hide! The building with the Graeco-Roman style pillars next to you and directly opposite the church is the Dome and its definitely worth a visit to see the interior and maybe have a coffee, if you can get a table.
The Georgian Assembly Rooms. were built in the late 18th Century and originally used for the social gatherings of Edinburgh’s elite. The ballroom is adorned with crystal chandeliers. In 1822 they hosted a ball attended by King George IV. A witness to the event said “The ladies were in most elegant white dressed, richly bespangled, and had on plumes of white ostrich feathers…their plumage in constant undulation, appearing to the eye like an ocean of foam”. The rooms are now used as an arts venue and for public events especially during the Edinburgh Festival.
