Edinburgh Spooky Ghost Tour

Edinburgh, as a medieval city, has many ghost stories to tell. This is a place where ghosts like to make an appearance. On this walk we visit the most famous haunted sites, in and around the Castle, and hear the fascinating stories of frightening encounters, such as the ghostly appearance of a monk, or, the church elder, who confessed himself to be in league with the devil. He has been seen riding around the city, in a ghostly carriage pulled by black horses. We also visit the most haunted pub in Edinburgh and the haunted final stop for those condemned to die. This and much more you will experience on this walk around the city centre. Happy ghost hunting.

Spooky Highlights of This Edinburgh Ghost Walk

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle has dominated the Edinburgh skyline for centuries, and the spot has been inhabited for Millenia, so of course it comes with its own legends and ghost stories. One legend has it that the area was once the burial ground for “pictish” princesses, and the area was inhabited by an order of virgin priestesses. In 1853 the remains of ancient female skeletons and coffins were unearthed. Many saw this as a vindication of the ancient tradition. The most famous ghost story relates to a tunnel discovered in the cellars of the castle some centuries ago. A piper volunteered to go down the tunnel, playing his bagpipes. His colleagues followed the sound along the Royal Mile then all of a sudden, the music stopped. Find out more on our tour.

The White Hart Inn

In 2005, The White Hart Inn was named the most haunted pub in Edinburgh. There are numerous examples of ghostly happenings, with visitors having their hair pulled, and staff experiencing plates flying off shelves, beer taps being turned off, and a severed pair of legs in the cellar. Find out more on our tour.

The Last Drop Inn

This pub is called The Last Drop, because condemned prisoners enjoyed their last drink here, before they were hanged. The place of execution is just a short distance away from here, in “Grassmarket” Square. There were many public executions here over the years. Throughout 1661-1668, no less than a hundred Presbyterian opponents to the entry of the Anglican church into Scotland, plus rebels and thieves of various sorts, were executed here. The Last Drop pub, commemorates the last hanging that took place in Grassmarket in 1864, and is the only building in the area to have preserved its style, and the exterior, from that period. The Last Drop is known for its ghost of a young girl. Find out more on our tour.

The West Bow

The West Bow was once home to a Major Weir, an outwardly pious man who was later convicted of sorcery, and selling his soul to the devil.  He was born in Lanark in 1600, and in 1649 became a Major in charge of the city guards. He seemed a very devout man, a regular attendee of prayer meetings, and a leader in his church. However, in his seventieth year he confessed that his life had been one of great sins. These included incest with his step daughter, and his sister, whom he had abused since she was a child, sex with his maid, other acts of adultery, and even bestiality with a mare and a cow. He was also accused of selling his soul to the devil, witchcraft, necromancy and sorcery. His sins were considered so great that he was condemned to be burnt at the stake, along with his staff, which was said to be possessed, and reportedly danced in the flames. Mary Kings Close

Mary Kings Close is probably the most famous haunted site on the Royal Mile. It is a set of subterranean dwellings, and passageways, that for a long time were closed off from the world. It has had a reputation for being haunted for 300 years. Here a seventeenth century couple were terrorized by a series of strange apparitions. During this century the city was hit by the bubonic plague pandemic, twice. After the second occurrence Mary Kings Close was abandoned and it was only re-occupied around 50 years later. One new occupant was Thomas Coltheart and his wife. One night his wife, who was reading her bible, looked up to see the disembodied head of an old man, with a flowing grey beard, hovering in the air, close to where she was. She then fainted and was later found by neighbours. Her husband, however, did not believe her and went to bed. Find out more on our tour.

The High Street

In the 1970’s, James Lightbody, a civil servant who lived near here, on the High Street, claimed his house was haunted, by a phantom monk that appeared suddenly, four years after he had started living in the house. He described the phantom as “tall and wearing long dark robes. His head was covered with a hood”. Find out more on our tour.
