The Old Town Walk is full of the history of the people who lived here

Just some of the highlights to enjoy on our Old Town Walking Tour

The Grassmarket

Archeological evidence shows that this area has been inhabited since the bronze age three thousand years ago but it was not part of Edinburgh until the fifteenth century when James III gave permission for a weekly market right here. We visit where Zeppelins dropped their bombs in world war 1 and take you through all the highlights of the area. Now it is one of the most picturesque and vibrant areas in the city with pubs, restaurants and some of the best shopping Edinburgh has to offer. Find out more on our tour.

The White Hart Inn is aid to be the oldest pub in Edinburgh it dates from 1516, though the building you now see is 18th Century. Two of the most infamous patrons were Edinburgh’s notorious serial killers, William Burke and William Hare. The famous Scottish poet Robert Burns also stayed here. Find out more on our tour.

The White Hart Inn

Maggie Dicksons

The Maggie the pub is named after was hanged on the Grassmarket after being found guilty of concealing and then possibly murdering her illegitimate baby, she was put in a coffin on the back of a cart and taken away for burial. As the cart trundled along the driver heard a muffled voice saying “let me out my neck hurts”, which was Maggie, very much alive. As she had already been declared dead she was not re-tried and went on to live a long life with many more children, but forever more has is remembered as “Half Hangit Maggie”.

Execution Site

This was one of the three main hanging sites in Edinburgh, and its where Maggie was “half” hanged.  This spot became the official site for public executions in 1660 and stayed that way for over a hundred years. Even a hangman was hanged here for murdering a beggar.  Just beyond this is the Covenanters Memorial in the form of a raised X in stone and marks the spot where 100 Covenanters were hanged for their religious beliefs between 1661 and 1668. Greyfriars Church

This is Greyfriars Kirkyard and it is one of the most historically significant churches in Scotland. It gets its name from the brown robed Franciscan Monks, who were first given the land here in the 15th Century but their friary was destroyed in the 16th Century Reformation. Brown, in those days was considered a shade of grey. Mary Queen of Scots herself gave permission for the friary land to be used as a burial ground, and a church was built on the land in the early 17th Century, and another church built in the 18th Century on the west end. They became one church in a 1938 refurbishment of the inside. If it’s open you will see a magnificent Peter Collins Organ and, below it, a small museum. Find out more on our tour.

Flooden Wall

There has been a city wall in Edinburgh since the 12th Century. They walls covered parts of the southern and central parts of the city, as the northern approaches were covered by the marshy N’or Loch, which was where Princes Street Gardens and Waverley Station now are. The first recorded city wall was the 15th Century Kings Wall. The Flooden Wall was built in the 16th Century after the English defeated the Scots at the Battle of Flooden in 1513, and Edinburgh expected a retaliation that never actually came.
