Enjoy the crawl around some of the best pubs in Edinburgh

See all the highlights of our wonderful Edinburgh Pub Tour Below

The Black Bull

There has been a Black Bull on the Grassmarket since the 19th Century, though the original building has been replaced. It used to be popular with sailors, and prostitutes, but these days it is more the sports and rock enthusiasts who are attracted to it. It claims to be the oldest rock bar in Edinburgh. Through the week, entertainment includes live music and live sport. Find out more on our tour.

The Grassmarket was once a busy market spot for corn, forage and cattle. The area is full of history. A previous owner of this pub, John Grant, claimed the famous poet ‘Robert Burn’s” drank, and watched cockfights in here, when he stayed in Edinburgh. The previous building was a 16th century Coaching Inn, the present building, which includes a bar, restaurant and beer garden, replaced the original hotel in the 1860s. The main entrance leads to a hall, which was once an alleyway between two separate tenements. Today it has something for everyone. The food menu is full of great food classics including hand-battered Fish and Chips, homemade Steak and Ale Pie, and Sausage and Mash, using local produce to keep the menu as traditionally Scottish as possible.  Find out more on our tour.

The Beehive Inn

The White Hart Inn

The White Hart Inn is thought to be the oldest pub in Edinburgh, it dates from 1516, though the building you now see is 18th Century. The name itself comes from an event from way back in 1128, when King David I set out hunting, and was thrown from his steed, in pursuit of an enormous white stag. When the angry stag confronted the King, ready to attack, the legend tells of a fiery cross appearing between its antlers, before the cross and stag disappeared. King David then built a shrine to the event. This establishment takes its inspiration from the story. Two of the most infamous patrons were Edinburgh’s notorious serial killers, William Burke and William Hare. The famous Scottish poet Robert Burns also stayed here. Find out more on our tour.

This pub is called The Last Drop because condemned prisoners enjoyed their last drink here, before they were hanged. The place of execution is just a short distance away from here, in “Grassmarket” Square. There were many public executions here over the years. Throughout 1661-1668, no less than a hundred Presbyterian opponents to the entry of the Anglican church into Scotland, plus rebels and thieves of various sorts were executed here. The Last Drop pub, commemorates the last hanging that took place in Grassmarket in 1864, and is the only building in the area to have preserved its style, and the exterior, from that period. Maggie Dicksons

The pub is named after the Maggie Dickson, who lived from about 1702 to about 1765. She was a fish-wife who was hanged on the “Grassmarket”, after being found guilty of concealing, and then possibly murdering, her illegitimate new born baby, though it was unclear whether the baby was stillborn, or died shortly after birth. Maggie was hanged at a public execution in Edinburgh’s ”Grassmarket”, on 2 September 1724. Her execution was followed by a near riot, as friends and relatives fought with medical students for possession of her body. The friends and relatives won, and Maggie was placed in a coffin, to be transported to “Musselburgh” for burial.

The Bow Bar

In 2017 the Bow Bar was named pub of the year at the AA Hospitality Awards, for “combining the provision of enjoyable food, a great pub atmosphere, and a warm welcome, with a high standard of management.” It was established in 1987, and has also won the Best in Edinburgh, at the Bar and Brew Awards in 2019, it has also won the Best Bar in Scotland in 2018 and 2017. So, it is definitely worth a visit, especially if you want a Whisky.

Deacon Brodies Tavern

This is one of Edinburgh’s most famous pubs, named after William Brody, born in 1741 and died in 1788. By day he was a wealthy and respected citizen, a cabinet maker by trade. By night he was a thief and a gambler, who kept two mistresses, and had a family by both of them, which was probably why he needed plenty of money. When he delivered an item of furniture to a customer, he also made impressions of the keys to their house, using a wax pad. He then made the keys in his workshop, and went back to commit the burglaries. He also plotted to break into the “General Excise Office”, in Chessels Court, where the Kings taxes were, having been collected from the Scottish people. Brody and his gang broke in but only managed to get £16 from the cashiers office. He then fled the country. He was eventually arrested in Amsterdam, brought back to Edinburgh, and sentenced to hang. However, he had a cunning plan. Find out more on our tour.

The Jolly Judge

The Jolly Judge is an independently owned bar, with low beamed ceilings, a log fire, and a peaceful atmosphere, with a generous helping of Scottish hospitality. Sample the wide range of malt whiskies, real ales, and tempting bar lunches. There is a wide variety of beers on tap, along with a fairly extensive list of single malt, and blended whiskies, and wines and spirits, to choose from. The pub won ‘Scottish Cider Pub of the Year’ award in 2018, and the Scotland and Northern Ireland Cider Pub of the Year in 2022. So, this traditional Edinburgh pub will not disappoint you.

The Castle Arms is a bistro style bar, just off the Royal Mile. It occupies several levels of a building that is typical of Edinburgh’s Old Town. The main entrance leads into a nicely furnished, split-level bar, with elaborate coving. There are stairs that descend to another bar, which has access to a terrace, with superb views over Victoria Street, and the east end of the Grassmarket, below. They offer a wide range of lagers, cask ales, spirits and soft drinks. For those looking for something more sophisticated, the bartenders can create fabulous cocktails, right in front of your eyes.
