Oxford Ghost Walking Tour

Find our Oxford Ghost Walking Tour highlights below

Magdalen Bridge

This grand bridge spans the River Cherwell, on the eastern side of the town. One of the better-known ghosts in Oxford, is the so-called “Black Diver” of Magdalen Bridge. He has been seen standing on the parapet, wildly flailing his arms, before he topples backwards, into the river. He is described as a small man, with dark skin, and a round head, and wearing a grubby coat. He is thought to be the ghost of a chimney sweep, who was shot and killed during the national election celebrations of 1754. Find out more on our tour.

Magdalen College

Magdalen College is haunted by several ghosts. One is none other than the playwright Oscar Wilde, who was a student here in the 1870’s. The second one is George Napier, a Jesuit, who was executed for his faith in 1568. His body was cut into four, and a piece hung on each of the four gates into Oxford. His head was also cut off, and placed on the gate to “Christ Church”. All of his body was recovered by his relatives, except his head. His ghost is said to wander around, sorrowfully searching for his head. His heavy, dragging footsteps have sometimes been heard, in the old house where he used to live. A house which now belongs to this College. There is also a headless shadowy shape, that has been seen gliding across the College lawn, matching the pace of people also crossing the lawn. Find out more on our tour.

Elizabethan Town House

The three storey Elizabethan town house, on the corner of High Street and Magpie Lane, which is now part of the Bank Hotel, is haunted by a ghost that has been identified as Prudence Burcote. She was a Puritan, and a supporter of Oliver Cromwell, during the English Civil War of the 17th Century. You have to remember, Oxford was the capital city of King Charles at this time, so her beliefs were not safe ones to have. To make matters worse she fell in love with a Royalist officer. The romance ended badly, and that is why she is thought to be the ghost of this building. Find out more on our tour.

Wadham College

Ghostly monks haunt Wadham College, and they probably date from the Augustinian friary that was once situated here, centuries ago. One of the ghosts is described as tall, and wears a white hooded robe. It has been seen standing next to the fireplace in the hall, and walking between the hall, and the chapel. Arthur Rees, the Head Porter at Wadham during the 1960’s, saw another phantom monk. After one of his night patrols, he suddenly felt a chill gust of wind and heard a whisper in his ear that said, “Turn to the right, my good man, look to your right”. When he turned, in the moonlight, he saw a monk standing in the old doorway to the chapel. Find out more on our tour

Trinity College

A pair of ghosts were once seen by student Miles Hudson, in Kettell Hall, which is one of the oldest parts of the College. He had been to a party, and was still awake at 3 o’clock in the morning. He was startled to see the apparitions of two men, floating through his closed and locked door. He could only see their top halves, as they had no legs. They both also looked very similar, twins in fact, of about sixty years of age, and both dressed in clerical collars. They drifted across to where Hudson lay, they then smiled at him, and then vanished. Find out more on our tour.

Place of Execution

The granite cross, in the road, marks the spot where three of the most important church reformers in England were burnt at the stake, in the sixteenth century, during the reign of Queen Mary. The three were Thomas Cramner, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury, Hugh Latimer who was the Bishop of Winchester, and Nicholas Ridley, the Bishop of London. At the site of the executions a weird glow has been seen on many occasions. Find out more on our tour.

Jesus College and Exeter Colleges

At Exeter College there has been seen a headless ghost. It was seen by Doctor Thomas Wood, outside his room, which was on the fifth floor of staircase VI, on Halloween night in 1916. He was shocked to see the headless apparition standing outside his door, which he had just opened. It had its arm raised, as if it intended to knock on the door. The ghost was wearing an outfit dated to the early 17th Century. Doctor Wood stood there shocked, until a few seconds later the apparition vanished. Find out more on our tour.

Merton is one of the oldest Colleges in Oxford, having been founded in 1264. The ghost here dates back to the 17th Century, and is that of a dashing “Cavalier”, called Colonel Francis Windebank. He has been seen walking around the College, apparently on his knees, as the floor has been raised since his time. He has also been seen on Deadmans Walk. Find out more on our tour.
