Museum of the History of Science

This is the original 17th Century building of the Ashmolean Museum, and the basement is where bodies were once dissected, by the Professor of Anatomy. He had the rights to the bodies of the corpses of prisoners, hanged within 21 miles of Oxford. Up the steps, on the raised ground floor, you will see the largest collection of astrolabes in the world, as well as some beautiful microscopes, including a silver one that belonged to King George III. Down stairs there is a blackboard that has been written on by Einstein, which dates from the 1930’s, when he lectured in Oxford. Find out more on our tour.

The Kings Arms Pub

The Kings Arms occupies a great position, on the corner of Parks Road and Honeywell Street. The site was originally occupied by buildings belonging to Augustinian Friars. Due to its proximity to the University, and its popularity with students, it claims it has the highest IQ of any pub in Oxford. In the 17th century, the King’s Arms was a popular location for plays.  This was also the place where corpses of paupers were brought to be checked by a lawyer, for foul play, before they could be dissected, in the basement of the Ashmolean.  Find out more on our tour.

Wadham College

Wadham College was founded in 1612, and later that same century, the Oxford Experimental Philosophy Club was founded. They used to meet in the rooms that are above the front entrance. Sir Christopher Wren, the famous architect, was a member of Wadham College, and attended those meetings. This club eventually led to the formation of the Royal Society, the leading scientific society in this country. The projects they attempted included, clockwork flying machines, transparent beehives, and the first mechanical seed drill. Find out more on our tour.

Museum of Natural History

This is another Museum where you could spend several hours looking around, before continuing, including visiting the Pitt Rivers Museum, which is also here. All the University Science books were moved here in 1861, to improve the access to the books, for the University researchers. To your right, as you look at the Museum, is the Radcliffe Science Library, which was the first purpose-built chemistry laboratory in Oxford, and its design is based on the Abbot’s Kitchen in Glastonbury. There are many great exhibits here, but before going in, have a look at the façade, with its carvings of plants and animals, along with Adam and Eve, and an angel. Find out more on our tour

The Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory

This facility saw the achievements of Dorothy Hodgkin, who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1964, for her pioneering work in x-ray crystallography. She also determined the structure of Penicillin, and vitamin B-12. Find out more on our tour.

The Chemistry Research Laboratory

This is a 17,000 square meters building. It constitutes the state-of-the-art home for University researchers. It is the largest, and probably the best, chemistry department in Western Europe. Find out more on our tour.

The Dunn Pathology Laboratory

This is where the pioneering work was done on Penicillin, by a brilliant team of scientists, Professor Howard Florey, Ernst Chain and Norman Heatley. They were so limited for funds that Professor Florey forbade anyone to use the lift, because of the expense. Their other problem was growing enough of the Penicillin mould. Their first patient, and Oxford policeman who had developed septicaemia after cutting his forehead on a rose thorn, died simply because they ran out of the Penicillin. Find out more on our tour.

This post-graduate college is named after Thomas Linacre, the 16th Century scientist, who petitioned the King to allow him to found the Royal College of Physicians. This was hugely important, as it eradicated the country of charlatans and malpractice, by setting up a licensing system for medical practitioners. Find out more on our tour

St Cross Church & Holywell Cemetary

In this graveyard you can find the last resting place of Professor Acland, who is renowned in the scientific world for his studies on the Oxford cholera epidemic of 1854. Ironically this graveyard was opened in 1847, to cope with the bodies of the victims of other cholera epidemics. Here you will also find the grave of Kenneth Grahame, the author of Wind in the Willows. Find out more on our tour.

The William Morris Garage

This was the building where William Morris designed the prototype of a new car, the “bullnose” Morris. From this building he started an empire that would eventually account for 30% of the UK car market. Making him a multi-millionaire. He then went on to fund extensive medical research programmes through the University of Oxford. He became Viscount Nuffield and established the Nuffield Foundation. Find out more on our tour.

Magdalen College

Magdalen College was the site of the Hospital of Saint John, from 1180, continuing for almost 300 years, up to the time the college was founded. The interest in science was continued by the college founder, William of Wayneflete, and has continued to this day. The Oxford Physic Garden was founded in 1621, on land owned by the college, growing plants for scientific and medicinal purposes. The college boasts an impressive seven scientific Nobel Prize winners. Find out more on our tour.
