Let’s go on an adventure in time on our Greenwich Walking Tour

Revealing the Story of Time

The Cutty Sark

The Cutty Sark was built in Scotland towards the end of the 19th Century to transport tea, then a very valuable cargo, from China. She was one of the last tea clippers to be built, and was one of the fastest before sailing ships gave way to steam powered ships. Now she is the last surviving ship of her kind. Cutty Sark then transported wool from Australia and held the record for the fastest time from Australia to England for 10 years. The name Cutty Sark is the nickname of a witch from a poem by Robert Burns, the ships figurehead is an image of her. Tourists can visit the ship.

Old Royal Naval College

The College is now a World Heritage site and is of “outstanding and universal value”, according to UNESCO. It is considered the finest architectural and landscape collection in the British Isles. It was built at the end of the 17thcentury as a hospital on the site of the old Royal Palace of Greenwich called the Palace of Placentia or Greenwich Palace. where all the 16th Century Tudor monarchs were born. Find out more on our tour.

National Maritime Museum

The National Maritime Museum is a free to enter museum. The museum has over 2 million items including maritime art, cartography , ship models and navigational instruments and astronomy and paintings including Admiral Nelson and Captain James Cook.

The Royal Observatory

This is the Old Royal Observatory and it holds an important place in the history of astronomy and navigation. It has the Prime Meridian running through it which is zero degrees longitude. This means it could be used as a baseline for time calculations and it therefore gave its name to Greenwich Mean Time. The observatory was commissioned in the late 1th Century by King Charles II with the aim of perfecting the art of navigation. It is now a museum and its worth having a look around.

The Planetarium

This is London’s only “Planetarium”. It’s a 120 seat digital laser planetarium opened in 2007. The cone that houses it is a 45 ton bronze structure. You can go in, sit back, and see the amazing shows projected on the ceiling for a small cost. Tickets have to be pre-booked.

The Rangers House

The house is the Rangers House a Georgian red brick mansion and was given to the Ranger of the park for most of the 19th Century. You have just walked through the beautiful rose garden of the house. From 2002 it has housed the Wernher collection of Art. There are around 700 pieces on display including Renaissance jewellery, ivories, enamels, bronzes, furniture and porcelain as well as paintings by Botticelli and Lippi and English artists Reynolds and Romney. There is a modest entry charge.

St Alfege Church

This is an 18th Century Anglican Church of medieval origins dedicated to St Alfege who was reputed to have been murdered on this spot in 1012 by Danish Viking raiders who were camped here. If it is open its worth a look inside at the architecture. General Wolfe the victor over the French in Canada is buried here.
