Oxford Pub Walking Tour

Find our Oxford Pub Walking Tour highlights below

The Eagle & Child

The “Eagle and Child”, nicknamed The “Bird and Baby”, had been part of an endowment belonging to University College since the 17th century. The pub reputedly served as the lodgings of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, during the English Civil War, of 1642 to 1649, when Oxford was the Royalist capital. It also served as a pay house for the Royalist army, and pony auctions were held in the rear courtyard. From late in 1933 onwards, there was a regular meeting, held on Monday or Tuesday lunchtimes, of the “Inklings” writers group, which included C.S.Lewis, J.R.R.Tolkien, Charles Williams, Owen Barfield and Hugo Dyson. They met together in a private lounge, at the back of the pub, called the ‘Rabbit Room. Find out more on our tour.

The Lamb & Flag is a pub owned by St John College. Historically, profits from the pub funded student scholarships. The Lamb had been operating since at least 1566, situated just south of Saint John’s. In 1613 the college moved the pub to its current site, the old site is now the Dolphin Quadrangle. It is believed that Thomas Hardy wrote much of his novel, Jude the Obscure, in this pub. In this novel, the city of Christminster is a thinly-disguised Oxford, and it is thought that a pub, that appears in certain passages of the novel, is based on The Lamb & Flag.  Find out more on our tour.

The Lamb & Flag

The White Horse Pub

This tiny pub is squeezed in between Blackwell’s two shops. The building dates from the sixteenth century, although its timber-framed front probably dates from the eighteenth. Its front was rebuilt in 1951, when a painted wall was revealed on the first floor. It is one of Oxford’s oldest pubs, and according to the Encyclopaedia of Oxford Pubs has had many different names: it was called the Mermaid when the in 1591, and was later known as the White Mermaid, and then the Jolly Volunteer. Then it took the name of the White Horse, but when the nearby “Elephant” closed down in 1820, it appears to have adopted that name for the next fifteen years. Find out more on our tour.

The Kings Arms

The Kings Arms occupies a great position, on the corner of Parks Road and Honeywell Street. The site was originally occupied by buildings belonging to Augustinian Friars. Due to its proximity to the University, and its popularity with students, it claims it has the highest IQ of any pub in Oxford. In the 17th century, the King’s Arms was a popular location for plays.  In the early 18th century, the south side and rear were rebuilt. The west frontage was added in the late 18th century. The pub in the 18th Century was a “Coaching Inn”, and later it was a hotel. Find out more on our tour

The Turf Tavern

The foundations of the Turf Tavern, and its use as a malt house and drinking tavern, date back to 1381. The low-beamed front bar area was built in the 17th century. Originally it was called the Spotted Cow, but the name was changed in 1842, probably as part of an effort to eradicate its reputation as a place of illegal gambling activities. Running along one side of the pub is one of the remaining sections of the old city wall. Due to the illegal activities conducted here, this pub was established in an area just outside the city wall, in order to escape the jurisdiction of the governing bodies of the local colleges. Find out more on our tour.

The Bear Inn

The Bear was founded in 1774 as The Jolly Trooper. There was once a Bear Inn on the High Street, that dated from 1241. When that pub closed, this pub adopted its name and then claimed it has acquired the history of the original pub, and so it is said to be one of the oldest pubs in Oxford. In The Bear you can see a collection of over 4,500 snippets of club ties, which was started in 1952 by the landlord, Alan Course, who had worked as a cartoonist at the Oxford Mail. Tie ends were clipped with a pair of scissors, in exchange for half a pint of beer. Find out more on our tour.
