The Kings Baths was established in the medieval period. During the Georgian and Regency times, people believed in the curative effect of bathing in hot springs. The King’s and Queen’s Baths were amongst the most popular bathing places in the city. They were built on the foundations of the Roman Baths as early as the 12th Century. In the 16th Century the Queen’s Baths were built on the south side of the building. The Austen family were known to come here during their stay in the city. The baths were mixed, with the exception of the Queen’s Baths, which admitted women only. Find out more on our tour.
The Pump Room, as you might expect, was where water was pumped into the room from the adjacent hot springs. It was built in 1705 at the request of “Beau Nash”, the Master of Ceremonies. The first builder, Thomas Baldwin, was fired for financial mismanagement. It was eventually completed by John Palmer, one of the main builders of the “Georgian” Baths. The building was finally opened in 1795. It appears in books by Jane Austen who wrote, “every creature in Bath was to be seen in the room at different periods of the fashionable hours”. This was the social centre of the city where people came to meet and drink the water, as it was believed to have medicinal purposes. Find out more on our tour.
A temple was built here in the first few years after the Roman conquest of Britain, between 60 to 70 AD. The buildings were gradually built up over the next 300 years. The street level buildings are 19th Century. The Roman name for Bath was “Aquae Sulis”. Sulis is a Celtic goddess whom the romans equated with Minerva. These Baths were in use right until the end of Roman rule in Britain, in the 5th Century AD. The reason for the baths being here is the natural hot springs that exist in the area. Rainfall from the Mendip hills sinks through limestone, to meet the rising geothermal energy heating the water, to between 69 and 96 degrees centigrade. Find out more on our tour.
This was the medieval church, of the former Benedictine Abbey that was situated here. It was founded in the 7th Century, and was rebuilt in the 12th and 16th Centuries. On the buttresses you will see carvings of an olive tree, encircled by a crown, below a Bishops “Mitre”, or hat. These represent Bishop Oliver King, who ordered the construction of the Abbey in the 15th Century. On either side of the West Window, facing you, you will see carvings of ladders, with angels ascending and descending them. Find out more on our tour
This fountain portrays Rebecca, from the book of Genesis. It was placed here in 1861 by Temperance campaigners, on the site of a notorious Inn, that was built right up against the Church. The inscription around the base is, “Water is Best”, a reflection of their beliefs. Find out more on our tour.
There has been a Guildhall in Bath since at least the 14th Century. The current one was built by Thomas Baldwin, in the 18th Century. The building now serves as a Council Chamber, a Register Office, and one of the venues for the Bath International Music Festival. If you ask at the reception, you may be allowed to visit the Banqueting room, one of the finest rooms in the city.
Apart from being somewhere to take some refreshment, the Coeur De Lion is the smallest pub in Bath. It dates from the 1950’s. The Duke of York coat of arms can be seen on its gable end, because he was the customer of a jewellery shop, that was on this site. The building itself is thought to be the oldest in the city, with its core dating from the 14th Century. See it also on our pub crawl around Bath.
This street follows the line of the medieval walls of the city, and the north gate was at the end of the High Street. In the 17th Century, it was fashionable to promenade along here. Here there is one of the last surviving sections of the medieval city walls. Most of the rest of the wall was removed as the city expanded. This section survived because there was a burial ground on the other side, so this section could not be built on. Find out more on our tour.
This is where the famous “Beau Nash” had his second home in Bath. He moved here when new gambling laws severely reduced his income and forced him to downsize. With a little imagination you can see what the building would have looked like in the 18th Century.
The Cross Bath is an historic pool for bathing. The warm water spring that feeds it was possibly used for bathing, even before the Romans came here. The healing powers of the bath were one of the reasons for the foundation of St Johns Hospital, next door. In the 16th to the 18th centuries the baths were visited frequently by Royalty, which greatly increased their popularity.
Established in 1174. St Johns Hospital is one of the oldest “Almhouses” in England. An Almshouse is charitable housing, provided to a particular community. The ‘hospital of the baths’, as it was known, was built beside the hot springs of “Cross Bath”, to provide shelter for the poor and infirm, and give them access to the healing waters of the baths. This building was erected in 1716. and is a Grade 1listed building. It still operates to provide a home for over 100 elderly poor. Find out more on our tour.
The Thermae Bath Spa is the combination of a historic spa, and a modern building, which is constructed in Bath stone, and enclosed by a glass envelope. It has two natural thermal baths, an open-air rooftop pool, and an indoor pool, and a large “Wellness Suite”, with two aromatic steam rooms, an Ice Chamber, Infrared Sauna and a Celestial Relaxation Room. It also has a cafe, three relaxation areas, and 27 spa treatment rooms, including the 18th century Hot Bath, in which water-based massage takes place. It normally attracts over 250,000 visitors a year, and is recommended as a spa experience.
