The Coeur de Lion is reputedly Bath’s smallest pub. The building is believed to date from 1749, and was originally known as “Marchants Court”. The Duke of York coat of arms can be seen on its gable end, because he was the customer of a jewellery shop, that was on this site. In around 1860 a public house, known as the Avondown Stores, was established at 4 Northumberland Place, and in around 1880 the name of the pub was changed to the Coeur de Lion. Nobody knows the reason for the change, but the name is thought to be unique in the UK. In 1886 the pub moved to its present premises, at 17 Northumberland Place. One of the most striking features of the pub is its stained glass window, featuring the “Devenish” brewery name, and crest.
The Old Green Tree Pub is on Green Street, which was one of the first streets to be built outside the walls, in the early eighteenth century, and shows what architecture in Bath was like before the arrival of one of the famous architects of Georgian Bath, John Wood. It was called Green Street because there used to be a bowling green here, that had a large tree at one end, that gave shade to the players on hot days. The Old Green Tree Tavern was built on the site of that tree around 1716. It is one of Bath’s most traditional pubs with oak panelling, low ceilings, and a fireplace, serving up familiar pub food, pints and cocktails. The big skylight is a nice feature. The half a dozen beers, on handpumps, might include Green Tree Bitter, and “Butcombe” Original, with guests such as “Pitchfork”, and “Plain Intrigue”; also, there are seven wines by the glass from a nice little list, 26 malt whiskies, and a farm cider.
The Saracens Head pub is a gabled inn, that dates from 1713, making it one of the oldest pubs in Bath. It was once an old “coaching” inn. Charles Dickens is thought to be one of its many customers, when he stayed in Bath in 1835. Whilst you are here look out for the Grey Ghost that haunts the pub. It is a traditional pub serving traditional food and drink. And given its age, is always worth a visit.
The Salamander is located in the heart of the Georgian city of Bath. It features a well-stocked bar, with a fine range of locally brewed Bath Ales, carefully selected wines, local ciders, and premium spirits, including extensive gin, whisky, and rum selections, served on the ground floor. There are nice places to sit and eat, and plenty more seating upstairs. The menu consists of traditional British pub classics, such as fish & chips, cheeseburger and fries, cooked ham, egg and chips, alongside many others, there are also great dishes for gluten free, vegan, and other dietary requirements. The building was a coffee house, dating from the eighteenth century, and only recently became a pub. Though, you could be forgiven for thinking it had been a pub for centuries. It has, however, gained a reputation for being haunted. Ghostly phenomena include glasses thrown by invisible hands, a particular spot having an unpleasant chill, and footsteps heard upstairs, when all the living people were downstairs.
This pub, adjoining the famous Georgian playhouse, The Theatre Royal, was once the residence of “Beau Nash”, the celebrated leader of Georgian Bath in the 18th Century, it was built around 1720. The house ale is exclusively brewed by Danish master brewer, Stig Anker Andersen, and is available to take home, in addition to being enjoyed from the hand pumps. The pub’s reputation for well-kept ale and cider, doesn’t rule out the comprehensive wine and spirits list, with over 20 wines available by the glass, and 50 whiskies. The bar menu features all the pub classics, that use the best regional ingredients, while the pre-theatre and à la carte menus are more fine dining in style. Everything is made from scratch, including the burgers, and ice cream. The Garricks Head is also regarded as the most haunted pub in Bath. There is the ghost of the demented woman whose lover was killed by her husband in the building. She became so hysterical, that she threw herself out of the window. Her screams and weeping are still sometimes heard. Also there has been mysterious knocking and banging, and things moving around unaided.
There has been a pub on this spot for centuries, ideally placed close to Bath Abbey, and the Roman Baths. It has all you would want from a Georgian pub, in terms of food and drink, with the added benefit of the location. It was once known as the “Three Tuns”, changing its name in the middle of the nineteenth century, to commemorate the “Great Exhibition”, held in London, in 1851. It stands on the site of a Roman building, and excavation work has revealed a roman tessellated pavement beneath it. It is also thought to be haunted. The ghost is a man in a hood, which is assumed to be a monk. The Abbey has been a religious site since the 10th Century, and where the pub is sited, probably lay within the Abbey precincts. If you go inside the pub, look out for the glasses rattling in their rack, on their own.
