Banksy in Bristol
Probably one of the most famous artists to come from Bristol is Banksy. This once anonymous graffiti artist is now world famous for his, sometimes controversial, street paintings, that all have underlying social commentary. He has inspired a new generation of graffiti artists, to create innovative and dynamic art. Among Banksy’s wonderful pieces, still available for viewing free of charge, are: Girl With a Pierced Eardrum which is one of his latest creations, from 2014; Well Hung Lover, which is Britain’s first ever legal piece of street art, and Queen Ziggy which appeared in time for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, in 2012. The Mild Mild West
“The Mild Mild West” is probably the best-known piece of street art in Bristol. It depicts a comic teddy bear, throwing a petrol bomb at three policemen. It was painted over three days in 1999, in broad daylight, after a rave party, held in nearby warehouses, attracted the attention of the police. At one event, in Winterstoke Road, police attacked the party goers dressed in riot gear. The artwork is known to be popular with the locals, who feel it is now part of the heritage of the area, and beautifully sums up the local spirit, which is friendly like a teddy bear until threatened. “Take the Money and Run” is one of Banksy’s longest surviving works in Bristol, and one of his earliest. It was painted in collaboration with two other street artists, Inky and Mobz. The mural depicts the silhouettes of three thieves, against a colorful backdrop. When this mural was painted, Banksy painted freehand, rather than using stencils, and we see his background, as a graffiti artist, was still strong. Find out more on our tour.
Take the Money and Run
Rose on a Mousetrap
The “Rose on a Mousetrap” is on the side of a house, and it is the only framed, and also the best protected, piece of graffiti in Bristol. At least 20 local residents gave money, to see it protected in this way. It shows how much pride the people from Bristol have in their home-grown artist. It is interesting to note that all Banksys works, even the earliest works from the 1990’s, are still more or less intact.Find out more on our tour.
The Paint Pot Angel
The Bristol City Museum, and Art Gallery is a recommended attraction for you to see. It is free to enter, and the museum part features sections on natural history, as well as local, national, and international archeological exhibits. The art gallery contains works from throughout the ages by nationally, and internationally, famous artists. It also has on display a Banksy sculpture, on permanent display in the museum’s sculpture hall, called the ”Paint Pot Angel”. The sculpture is of an angel, covered in a pot of pink paint, and it attracts thousands of fans of his work, from all over the world, every year. Find out more on our tour.

Girl with a Pierced Eardrum
“The Girl with a Pierced Eardrum”, was created in October 2014. Look out for the clocktower, as a nearby landmark. It is Banksys light hearted take on the famous painting, by Vermeer, called the “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. The earring is replaced by a security alarm box. It was painted after the media had reported the arrest, and later the identification, of the mysterious and elusive graffiti artist. It had black paint splattered on it within 24 hours of being painted, which many believe actually adds to its beauty.
Well Hung Over
“Well Hung Over”, or “Love Cheat”, as its also known, depicts a cuckolded husband in a suit, with his wife in lingerie behind him, as her lover hangs naked from the window, covering his genitals with his left arm. The husband, suspecting his wife, searches out of the window for her lover. This shows Banksy at his best, painting a provocative piece on the side of a building that used to be a sexual health clinic, on Frogmore Street. The mural is 5 meters above street level, and to keep it a secret, whilst it was being painted, scaffolding and a tarpaulin were erected to cover it. Later the City Council removed the scaffolding, and discovered the artwork. Find out more on our tour.
Queen Ziggy
“Queen Ziggy” was painted in 2012, over a previous Banksy painting. It is a wonderful black and white painting of the Queen, with a lightening flash across her face, much like the Ziggy Stardust persona, created by David Bowie in the 1970’s. Banksy is believed to have made this piece as his tribute to the late monarch, for her Diamond Jubilee.
