For over the last 100 years, people in this theatre have been sensing the ghostly presence of a woman, in a high collared, long dark dress. Many believe it is the ghost of Sarah McReady. She lived over 150 years ago, and managed the Theatre, single handed, for more than 20 years, after the death of her husband. She took the tickets in the box office, then managed backstage, during the performance. She has terrified more than one young actress. In one story an actress, waiting in the wings for her cue to go on stage, felt someone push past her, but couldn’t see anybody. She was so frightened she went on stage early to avoid another encounter. Find out more on our tour.
The King William III pub, dates from 1670, and stands in a set of 17th Century gabled buildings, that was originally three houses. When it was built it was as a refuge, for the poor women of Bristol. Nearby is another pub, The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, which is also popular on pub crawls. The King Street entrance includes a 17th Century door frame, along with an 18th Century shop front. The pub also features some old stone fireplaces. In 1998 customers claimed they heard a ghost, walking up the back stairs and calling out to staff. Find out more on our tour.
The Llandoger Trow is supposed to be one of the most haunted places in the country, with over 15 ghosts in the grounds. This pub was built in 1664. Originally it was part of a set of houses, when it was bought by a Welsh sailor, known as Captain Hawkins, who named the pub after the Welsh village of “Llandogo”. The pub is also known to have been visited by the famous pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. One of the ghosts is claimed to be that of a young crippled boy, who died in the building. When all is quiet, he is said to create an uneasy silence, and an eerie atmosphere. Find out more on our tour.
The house next door to All Saints church, on Corn street in 1846 was inhabited by a Mr and Mrs Jones. One day they found themselves in the midst of a ghostly encounter, that was reported in several newspapers at the time. The ghost of a wizened old man, appeared to them in their home. Mrs Jones was so frightened she nearly jumped out of the window, and Mr Jones was so gripped with fear, from a flickering light that appeared in the hallway, that he fell to the floor and curled up in a ball. Find out more on our tour.
A black robed monk has been seen regularly around All Saints Church. It is believed, or hoped, that this ghost keeps guard over some long-buried treasure. The treasure is thought to have been hidden somewhere in the church, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, in the 16th Century. When the Kings men came to take away the treasures of the church, they found some, but they believed there was much more, hidden somewhere, as they had heard stories about a monk who had disappeared with some treasure. That treasure, and the monk, was never found. The first reports of sightings of the ghost came later in the 16th Century. Find out more on our ghost tour.
The Rummer is in a building that dates from the 1740’s. It was once the destination of the stagecoach from London, a journey that took 38 hours. Famous visitors include William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The building next door is said to have been built on a burial ground, as bones have been found under the cellar floor. The pub is said to be the home of a number of ghosts, with at least three different spirits being seen inside the pub, or looking out of its windows. One of them is a woman dressed in white, who has been seen walking through a glass door in the pub. She is described as a young lady of about eighteen, with long black hair, in a white old-fashioned dress. Find out more on our tour.
Bristol Cathedral was once part of an Augustinian Abbey, that was founded in 1140, and became the Cathedral of the city in 1549. One of two cathedrals in the city, it is a mixture of many different architectural styles, as it was built over 600 years, from the 13th to the 19th Centuries. The Cathedral also has its very own ghost. The ghost of a grey monk has been seen many times, in and around the cathedral grounds and buildings, and as even gone into the library next door, by disappearing through the wall, at the side of the building, then going into the religious books section. Find out more on our ghost tour.
