Cardiff Castle can be regarded as a bit of a fake, or, as a survivor of history of some importance. It stands on the site of the Roman fort, built around 55 AD. It was abandoned in the 4th Century. Seven hundred years later the Normans turned it into a castle. It is said William the Conqueror built the original castle, while returning from a pilgrimage to St David’s in 1081. Over time it has been used as a great house, a prison, and a farm. The famous Welsh rebel, Owain Glyndwr, besieged and sacked it in 1403. Find out more on our tour.
Cardiff Arms Park is the spiritual home of Welsh Rugby. A game that is an obsession for the Welsh people. This arena hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1958, and four games of the World Cup in 1991. The first stands appeared in the 1880’s. In the 1970s a new national stadium was built, on the site of the original, and a new stadium was built, just to the South. That Stadium was demolished, and the Millennium Stadium was built in its place in 1997. Find out more on our tour.

A Welsh coal miner called “Dic Penderyn” was hanged here in 1831, for allegedly killing a soldier with a bayonet. He had taken part in the “Merthyr Rising”, of 1831. However, there was not enough evidence to prove his guilt and over 11 thousand people signed a petition for his release. Find out more on our tour
The Hayes is one of the three key shopping streets in Cardiff, the other two being St Mary Street, and Queen Street, which we also visit. The Hayes is almost completely pedestrianised. In front of you there is the Hayes Island snack bar, which has a story to tell. It was originally the parcel depot for the Cardiff Corporation Tramways, in 1911. Horse trams were exchanged for electric trams in 1903. The depot kiosk was closed in 1942, and reopened in 1948, as a snack bar, making it the oldest snack bar in Wales. Find out more on our tour.

St John the Baptist Church is the only church in Cardiff that existed before medieval times. It was built in 1180, as a chapel for the larger St Marys Church, which was founded by monks from the Benedictine Abbey, in Tewkesbury. The church was destroyed during the rebellion of Owain Glyndwr, in 1404, and rebuilt in the 15th Century. It has been remodelled and extended a number of times since, most notably in the 19th Century, by the Bute family. Find out more on our tour.
In the 19th Century, Cardiff experienced a sudden influx of immigrants, from Ireland, due to the troubles there. As Ireland was mostly Catholic, the number of Catholics in the city increased rapidly, who all wanted to go to church. The original Church, known as St David’s, was built in 1842, on David Street. It was funded by Catholic donations from Wales, and Ireland, and from donations by Lady Catherine Eyre, from Bath. The new Church was built in 1887, and it became a Cathedral in 1920, after it had become the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cardiff. It is one of only three Roman Catholic Cathedrals in the UK. The area that makes up Bute Park, were at one time the grounds of the Castle, on the east side of the river Taff. The park is named after the 3rd Marquess of Bute, whose family owned the castle.
