George Square

Today, George Square is an attractive, and interesting place to visit. It was named after King George III, and became the centre of merchant activity in the city, as it is the location of the Merchants House customs and exchange building, that was built in 1850. Prior to 1780 it was a hollow in the ground, filled with filthy, stagnant water, with slaughterhouses all around its edges. There are many statues and monuments in the square, mostly to famous Scots, including Robert Burns, James Watt, and Robert Peel, as well as the Cenotaph, raised to the memory of the Glaswegian soldiers killed in the First World War. Find out more on our tour.

Glasgow City Chambers

On the eastern side of the square is the Glasgow City Chambers. It was built in 1889, and it has been the City Council main offices since 1996. You can do a self-guided tour of the building, or go with a tour guide, which is free, and run on weekdays from 10.30am to 2.30am, but check the times to avoid disappointment. The building was extended in 1923, and 1984, but it has kept to the original Renaissance Classical Italianate style, and it has many ornate internal features. The central pediment is a celebration of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The statues on the apex represent Riches and Honour, with Truth in the middle. The statues on the tower represent the four seasons. In the entrance hall you will find a wonderful mosaic floor, depicting the Glasgow Coat of Arms, and the ceiling is decorated in goldleaf, with a stained-glass dome. Find out more on our tour.

Buchanan Galleries

The Buchanan Galleries is the largest, and most prestigious, shopping gallery in Glasgow, with nearly 100 stores. Glasgow is an amazing place for shopping, perhaps second only to London, in the UK. You are standing in the middle of the main Glasgow shopping area, so it is worth taking the time to look around. Apart from international brands, you’ll find a curious whiskey shop, which is almost a museum, and has a lot of information about the different types of whiskey, along with typical silver vessels used to drink whiskey. The building also incorporates the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The Galleries, and Buchanan Street, are named after the family that once owned much of the land in the area. Find out more on our tour.

The Lighthouse

You might wonder what a lighthouse is doing in the middle of a city, and you wouldn’t be the first. It is actually the re-named conversion of the former offices of the Glasgow Herald newspaper, that was built in 1895. Today it is the centre for Design and Architecture in Scotland. Their aim is to help people understand the link between architecture, creative industry and design, through exhibitions, and interactive displays. Spread over six floors, the Centre boasts 6000 square meters of exhibition space, and hosts twelve local, and three international shows a year. The first floor is dedicated to education, with a computer laboratory, workshops, and the “Wee People’s City”. This is a hands-on play area especially designed for 8 to 13 year-olds, that aims to promote understanding about building and design. Find out more on our tour

Princes Square

Princes Square is a renowned shopping arcade in Glasgow. The area was originally named to honour the Prince of Wales, in the time of Queen Victoria, by James Campbell. James owned the square, and had just been knighted by the Queen. He later became the Lord Provost of Glasgow. Now the entire square is sheltered by a clear, glass vaulted, domed roof. On top of the roof is the Princes Square icon, a metal sculpture of a peacock putting on a full display. The original sandstone facades are now inside the square. It has been described as “one of the most intelligent pieces of urban renewal. Find out more on our tour.

St Enoch Square

So you may be wondering who is Saint Enoch. A long time ago this square was part of Glasgow Green, that was beside the River Clyde. Glasgow Green is now gone, but it had a chapel, which was the burial site of Saint “Thenew”, who name was later corrupted to become Saint Enoch. She was the mother of Scotland’s patron saint, St Kentigern, whose nickname was Mungo. The land ultimately passed to the City Council, and in 1780 they replaced the long-lost chapel with Saint Enoch’s church, and created Saint Enoch’s square. Find out more on our tour.

Argyle Street

Argyle Street runs for over two miles. It is pedestrianized south of the city centre, as far as Queen Street. It includes the St. Enoch Centre, and the Argyle Arcade. It was originally called the Wester Gate, and was renamed Argyle Street in honour of Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyle, after he died in 1761. The Argyll arcade is the oldest covered shopping arcade in Britain. Find out more on our tour.

Glasgow Green was a strip of land, donated by William Turnbull, Bishop of Glasgow, in 1450, to the people of Glasgow. The people originally used it for washing and bleaching laundry, mending and drying fishing nets, and grazing sheep. It was the city’s only green space, and it was once a marshy flood plain.  It covered 136 acres, and was divided into separate areas, High Green, Low Green, Carlton Green, and Gallowgate Green. It remained this way until 1817. After the Napoleonic Wars, there was a depression and high unemployment, so the Council hired over 300 workers to remodel the Green. It was levelled and drained and began to be a popular place for residents to come. Over the years it saw many political and revolutionary events. Find out more on our tour

The People’s Palace

The People’s Palace and Winter Gardens were opened to the public in 1898. It is a museum that tells the story of the people of Glasgow, their history and their struggles. The museum has three floors. The ground floor enables access to the Winter Gardens, attached to the rear of the Palace, which is a vast Victorian glass construction. that has a large collection of tropical plants, there is also a café here if you would like some refreshment.  The cafe is attached to the rear of the Palace. There is also a museum shop, and some exhibition space here. Find out more on our tour.

Tolbooth Steeple

The Glasgow Tolbooth was a municipal building, located at Glasgow Cross, which was the heart of the ancient “burgh”, and now the city, of Glasgow. This is a major junction, with five streets leading off from it. The first Tolbooth was built on this site in the mid 14th Century. This “Tolbooth” Steeple is 38 metres high, and it is all that remains of the original 17th Century building. That building was used as a prison and courthouse in the 17th and 18th centuries. After being sold for commercial use, by the early 20th Century it became very dilapidated, and was eventually demolished in 1921. Find out more on our tour.

Glasgow Cathedral

Glasgow Cathedral, or St Mungo’s Cathedral, is one of only a few churches to survive the reformation. It’s rich history dates from the 12th Century. The interior is very ornate, and could take you several hours to fully explore and appreciate. The good news is that admission is free. Inside the cathedral, you can admire the ancient “Rood” screen, an ornate partition between the chancel and the nave. “Rood” screens are rare in Scottish churches, and this one is much valued. In 1999 the magnificent Millennium Window was installed, in the north wall of the nave. There are several side chapels, including the Chapel of St John the Baptist, where you can see St Mungo’s Well.Find out more on our tour.

Provands Lordship

The “Provands Lordship “is the oldest house in Glasgow. It is now a fascinating museum, on three floors, that shows what life was like in medieval times. It was built in 1471, and was once part of St Nicholas Hospital. It was originally intended to house the master of the hospital, but a succession of Canons, from the Cathedral, lived here. In the 19th century, the Lord “Prebendary” of “Balenock” lived here. A “prebend” is a stipend allocated to priests of the Anglican Church. It is possible that the word “provand” is a corruption of prebend. In 1906 the house was sold to a family who opened a sweet shop at the front, and had their factory at the back. They kept the shop until the end of the Second World War, when they sold the building to the “Provand’s Lordship” Society, who wanted to restore the house to its former glory.
