University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 by a Papal decree of Pope Nicholas V. During the Reformation the University Mace, and the decree, were taken to France, the University Mace was later returned, but the decree was lost. In 1870 the main campus was built here on Gilmore hill, by Sir George Scott. It was built in the Gothic style, in a bi-quadrangle layout, with an open undercroft. The spire was added to the bell tower in 1887. The University’s other departments are spread out in various buildings around the city, and around the country. During the 18th century the University was the main centre of the Scottish Enlightenment movement. Find out more on our tour.

Hunterian Museum

The “Hunterian” Museum is the oldest public museum in Scotland, founded in 1807, with funds bequeathed by Dr William Hunter. Dr Hunter was a leading obstetrician, as well as a physician and anatomist. He also accumulated, and left to the museum, his collections of books and coins. The coin collection is reputed to be one of the largest in the world. He also bought other collections, including those of Horace Walpole, and Thomas Crofts. Find out more on our tour.

Lord Kelvin Statue

One of the great men of science, Lord Kelvin formulated the first and second laws of thermodynamics. He contributed greatly to the development of physics as an academic discipline, and he was the first physicist to gain entry to the House of Lords. Absolute temperatures are stated in units of kelvin, in his honour. He also determined the correct value for absolute zero of -273.15 degrees Celsius. In addition to his career in physics, he was an electric telegraph engineer and inventor, for which he became famous and rich. His title refers to the nearby River Kelvin. Find out more on our tour.

Lord Lister Monument

Joseph Lister succeeded Lord Kelvin as President of the Royal Society in 1895. He worked on antiseptic techniques, including the sterilisation of instruments with carbolic acid, researching inflammation, advancing diagnostic science through the microscopic analysis of specimens, and developing post operative strategies for the care of wounds. He did all this whilst working at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. His work led to a revolution in patient care, leading to a reduction in post operative infections, and made surgery much safer for patients, earning him the title of the “father of modern surgery”. After Listers’ death in 1912, the initial idea to commemorate Lister’s work was to set up a museum, in the Royal Infirmary, to display his old equipment. Find out more on our tour

Kelvingrove Art Gallery

This museum opened in 2006, after a three-year refurbishment project. Today it is one of Scotland’s most popular, free to enter, tourist attractions, and it is the most visited museum outside of London. Amongst the main exhibits are the “Christ of Saint John of the Cross” by Salvador Dalí. The copyright of this painting was bought by the curator of the museum, after a meeting with Dalí himself. It has one of the finest collections of arms and armour in the world, and a vast natural history collection. Find out more on our tour.

Kelvin Hall

Kelvin Hall is one of the largest exhibition centres in the UK. It was opened as an exhibition hall in 1927. It has also been used as a concert hall, and as Glasgow’s Museum of Transport, which has now moved to the banks of the River Clyde. It is now a mixed-use arts and sports centre. It was designed to complement the municipal display of Kelvingrove Park. It has a red sandstone frontage, with a palatial entrance piazza. The previous hall was destroyed by fire, in 1925. Find out more on our tour.

Curlers Rest

The Curlers Rest is the oldest pub in the area, and it dates from the 17th Century. Originally the building was next to a pond which has now disappeared. The pond was once used for curling, when it was frozen. It was allegedly granted a licence to be open seven days a week by King Charles II. This was once a relatively rural area, called the “Byres” of Patrick. The pub stands on Byres Road, which a key arterial road of Glasgow’s West End. Find out more on our tour.

Ashton Lane, in the early 1970’s, was a run-down area of empty commercial, and small residential properties. These days it is full of bars and restaurants. The locally famous Grosvenor Café, and the now internationally renowned “Chip” are worthy of a visit. Some like “Jinty McGuintys” Irish Bar have also been here for quite a while too, over 25 years. Hunterian Art Gallery

The Hunterian Art Gallery is open to the public, and is free to enter. It hosts one of the most important public art collections in Scotland, with a wide range of works from distinguished artists such as Rembrandt and Rubens to the Scottish Colourists and the Glasgow Boys. There is also an outdoor sculpture courtyard of modern works by British artists. Also here is the worlds best collection of works by James McNeill Whistler and the largest collection of works by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Find out more on our tour.

Mackintosh House

Part of the “Hunterian” Art Gallery is Mackintosh House. A homage to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who was a 19th and early 20th Century architect, designer, artist and a major figure in the UK Art Nouveau Movement. His wife was also an artist of some renown. They lived in a house on the nearby Southpark Avenue, between 1906 and 1914. When they moved, a Mr Davidson bought the house, and all their furniture, which, in turn, came up for sale in 1946. The house was then bought by the University, and the family donated the furniture. The house museum has been a part of the “Hunterian” Art Gallery since 1981. Find out more on our tour.
