The Beatles Story is a museum that takes you to the very beginning of the band’s history, in the 1950’s. Every fan of the Beatles must see this exhibition on Liverpool’s most famous celebrities. There are guides that are narrated by Julia Baird, John Lennon’s sister, and Paul McCartney, and includes how he and John Lennon met each other. They also recreate the key locations and moments, in the band’s history. You will hear about their early career in Liverpool and when they went to Hamburg, and performed in the Star Club. After that came the Cavern Club, here in Liverpool, and then their journey around the world. You will even see some of the original instruments used by the band. There Find out more on our tour
The Beatles Statue is a great photo opportunity for Beatles fans, especially as it is located right in front of the Liver Building. Close examination of the statue reveals small personal details. John Lennon has two small acorns in his hand, which celebrates the occasion where he planted two acorns in the garden of Coventry Cathedral, in 1968, as a symbol of his, and Yoko’s, desire for world peace. It is claimed that this hotel is the best Beatles themed hotel in the world. It is certainly an historic building, that was built in 1884. The front is adorned with the artists statues, and as you climb the stairs you will see exclusive Beatles photographs. Throughout the hotel you will see Beatles memorabilia, including a Yellow Submarine jukebox in the lobby. You can also stay in the Lennon suite, or the McCartney suite. Beatles music is played in the public areas of the hotel and, in the bar, there are many of Ringo’s photos. It is also ideally located just a short distance from their famous Liverpool venue, the Cavern Club. Find out more on our tour.
Perhaps one of the most famous venues in the world, the Cavern club opened in 1957 as a jazz club, and later became the focal point of Liverpool’s rock and roll scene, in the 1960’s. The Beatles regularly played here in their early years, mostly at lunch times as part of the weekday “beat sessions”. The Beatles first appeared here after returning from Hamburg, in Germany, and were instantly signed up as the club’s resident lunch time group, working on alternate days to another well known Liverpool band, Gerry and the Pacemakers. This narrow street was, in the 1960’s, packed to overflowing during the weekday lunch time hours, with queues that formed four abreast at noon, growing until the queue reached over 70 metres from the door. Cilla Black was born Priscilla Maria Veronica White. She was born in 1943, and died in 2015. She was better known to the world as Cilla Black. She was closely associated with the Beatles, and worked in the cloakroom of the Cavern Club. It was there she gave impromptu singing performances which impressed everyone, including the Beatles. McCartney went on to write several of her hits, including her number 1 hits, Anyone Who Had a Heart, and You’re My World. Find out more on our tour.
The Magic Beatles Museum consists of over 300 pieces of Beatles memorabilia, housed in an old Victorian warehouse. They tell the story of their incredible journey, from the streets of Liverpool, to international fame and stardom, and then to their innovative time as a studio based band. Here you will find George Harrisons Futurama guitar, which was used on their early shows and recording sessions, Beatles drum kits, and the earliest known colour footage of the band performing. The origins of the White Star Pub can be traced back as far as 1880, and it was named after the shipping line that owned the Titanic. It has a lot of Liverpool memorabilia as well as featuring in the history of the Beatles. This pub is where the Beatles played their first ever gig. They would also receive their payment for performances in the “Cavern” club here, in the backroom of the pub. In that backroom there is a wall that is decorated with memorabilia of the Beatles, and is known as, “The Beatles Wall”. Find out more on our tour
This sculpture of a middle-aged woman sits on a bench, with space for you to sit next to her, and it is another great photo opportunity. It is dedicated to, “all the lonely people”, of Liverpool. It was sculpted by a man who was known for his ability to entertain rather than sculpt. His name was Tommy Steele, who was well known in the 50’s and 60’s for his acting and singing ability. He donated it to the city because of his love of performing here. He claimed to have hidden several items inside the sculpture, including a 4 leaf clover, a football sock, and a page from the Bible. It is obviously a tribute to the Beatles number 1 hit song Eleanor Rigby, which portrays a sad, lonely soul, which is portrayed by her bedraggled appearance in the sculpture. The Jacaranda is a famous music bar, affectionately known as “Jac”. It was established by the Beatles first manager, Allan Williams. This is where the band used to rehearse and perform, when they were called the Silver Beatles. When they first met Allan Williams they harassed him to let them play here, which he agreed to, on the condition that they paint the whole place. John Lennon actually helped paint the toilets. The band would then rehearse in the basement. Those rehearsals laid the foundation for the world-famous band they would one day become. They also played around a dozen performances here, and they were paid with free drinks. Shortly after, Allan became their manager, and booked them on the first Hamburg tour. The bar was refurbished and re-opened in 2014, and it hosts many unsigned bands, with open microphone nights, and live bands playing every Friday and Saturday. Find out more on our tour.
It was at this Institute that Paul McCartney and George Harrison studied, as well as Mike McCartney, who was the man that introduced Paul to John Lennon. It closed in 1985 but has re-opened thanks to sponsorship from Paul McCartney. Find out more on our tour.
No 3 Gambier Terrace was once the home of John Lennon, in 1960. He lived there with Stuart Sutcliffe, the former Beatles bassist. Stuart had asked the others who lived here if, the then homeless, John Lennon, could also move in. They all attended the Liverpool College of Art, which was nearby. It was the first place John had lived after his childhood home, when he lived with his aunt. Paul and George came here regularly, and the band often rehearsed here. The flat proved very helpful to his relationship with Cynthia Powell, who later became John’s first wife, as now they could enjoy some privacy together. Find out more on our tour.
