The Philharmonic Hotel is perhaps the most famous pub in Liverpool. It has fantastic art nouveau décor, and toilets made of marble. The main bar is filled with mosaics, stained glass windows, and beaten copper panelling. The smaller rooms, called Brahms and Liszt, are smaller and more intimate settings, but still have stained glass and elaborate fireplaces. It is regarded as the most ornate pub in Britain. It was built between 1898 and 1900, and is spread over five floors, with each room decorated in a musical theme. Buddy Holly performed here, as did Paul McCartney, which was televised on James Corden’s, The Late Late Show. Find out more on our tour
The Roscoe Head is popular with students, and is named after the cultural icon, and anti-slavery campaigner, William Roscoe. It is situated in a small Georgian building. The pub opened in the 1830’s. Affectionately known as the “little Roscoe”, it has four tiny rooms, excellent beer, and good food. In 2021 it won a CAMRA, the campaign for real ale award, for being one of the best pubs in the UK. It is a FREE house, and is the only pub in the north, and only one of five in the UK, to have appeared in every edition of the CAMRA good beer guide, since it was first published in 1974. The Beehive is a fine Victorian Pub, with an amazing high ceiling, and rich plaster carving. It is popular with postmen who work at the nearby sorting office. It has an excellent jukebox, though there may not be much after 1957, and you may find patrons filling up all the available space, dancing to rock and roll. The pictures on the walls are from that era also. All the beer is from kegs, but the prices are reasonable. Find out more on our tour.
The flamboyant looking Crown Hotel is a designated Grade 2 listed building. It was built in an art nouveau style in 1905. It is a grand introduction to Liverpool for anyone arriving at Lime Street Station, with amazingly ornate plasterwork, a bar counter front in copper, a ceramic fireplace, and good quality panelling. It serves cask ales, craft beers, pub grub, and you can even get a cup of tea. Prices here are regarded as fair, rather than cheap. Find out more on our tour.
Dr Duncan’s was named after William Henry Duncan, the first Medical Health Officer in the UK, who was born in Liverpool. It resides in, what was once, the entrance hall for the Pear Assurance Company, and it was built in 1901. It has huge columns, and vast amounts of tiling and mosaic. The quieter room, which wraps around the main room, is less ornate, but still gives the feeling that you are in an Indian Railway waiting room. You feel that, at any moment, you could encounter an explorer of the east, or a member of the old East India Company, travelling on business. Find out more on our tour.
Thomas Rigby’s is supposedly the oldest pub in the city, dating from 1726. It has recently undergone a restoration, so it is a modernised old-fashioned pub, and can therefore feel a little fake. Next to it is its sister pub, the Lady of Mann, and it shares a courtyard with it at the back. Inside there is the Nelson Room, with quite a bit of memorabilia dedicated to the Admiral, who brought prosperity to Liverpool by liberating the seas, so it’s ships could sail, and trade, without hinderance. Find out more on our tour.
The Saddle is a traditional British pub, serving cask ales, and a wide range of Gins. It is an attractive, and very popular, two roomed establishment, with lots of interesting wall art. It has huge windows from which to watch the light slowly move across the Royal Insurance building. It is great for a beer and sandwiches, and a lively atmosphere in which to enjoy them. Around the corner next door to the Saddle is the Hole in the Wall Pub, which claims to be the oldest pub in Liverpool, dating from 1726. Find out more on our tour
The Railway is a large Italianate pub, with big, grand rooms, and a long bar. It is a great pub to have a party in. It was named after the railway station opposite, and many of the customers you would once have found here, would have been probably waiting for a train. However, the station closed in 1977. These days, situated as it is in the heart of the business district, it is more likely to be frequented by local businessmen. There is often live music, and there are plenty of real ale choices on offer. The Lion, next door, is altogether more cosy and quieter. There are strong mosaics and rich tiling, together with a glass cupola. It also serves real ales. Find out more on our tour
The White Star is a traditional old fashioned back street, real ale pub. It has been refurbished, but has somehow kept true to what it is. It is renowned for the quality of its beers. It’s the kind of place grandfathers bring their grandsons, to watch the football. Everything about it says tradition. It was said there have been many locals, who have come here for 40 years, and never set foot in the back room. It was named after the shipping company that owned the Titanic, and you will see pictures of their ships on the walls. It also has a lot of Liverpool memorabilia, as well as featuring in the history of the Beatles. This pub is where the Beatles played their first ever gig. Find out more on our tour.
The Globe is another small two roomed pub, with attractive décor, opened in 1888. It is famous for its sloping floor. It really stands out, in a good way, against the more modern pubs around it. It is a Cains real ale pub, and the brewery is just around the corner. The Merseyside Branch of CAMRA was founded here in 1974. If you want a traditional pint, in traditional surroundings, then you cannot beat it. Find out more on our tour.
The Jacaranda is a famous music bar, affectionately known as “Jac”. It was established by the Beatles first manager, Allan Williams. This is where the band used to rehearse and perform, when they were called the Silver Beatles. When they first met Allan Williams they harassed him to let them play here, which he agreed to, on the condition that they paint the whole place. John Lennon actually helped paint the toilets. The band would then rehearse in the basement. Those rehearsals laid the foundation for the world-famous band they would one day become. They also played around a dozen performances here, and they were paid with free drinks. Shortly after, Allan became their manager, and booked them on the first Hamburg tour. The bar was refurbished and re-opened in 2014, and it hosts many unsigned bands, with open microphone nights, and live bands playing every Friday and Saturday. Find out more on our tour.
The Dispensary is a modern pub, in an old pub’s shell. It was once the Grapes, a pub that had become rundown. It could be said that “The Dispensary” is an example of Liverpool’s regeneration. Another Cain pub, it serves excellent cask ales, and food. The Victorian architecture is still apparent, and is known to be a great pub to visit, for a few drinks, whilst watching live sport.
