The Cliffords Tower site has a long history. It is what is known as a “motte and bailey” castle and was built late in the 11th Century following the Norman conquest of England. The Motte is the mound and the Bailey is the tower. The original tower was made of wood. This stone one dates from the 13th Century. Over the years York Castle was rebuilt and reinforced with extensive water defences, including a moat and an artificial lake. Find out more on our tour

This tower was built to replace an earlier tower in about 1500. The outside of the Tower was originally built at the point where the city walls meet the River Foss. The waters edge once went right up to the tower. Now the Foss runs on the other side of the modern pub that you see built like a castle tower. Originally the tower had no roof and if you look just under the roof you will see how the battlement has been turned into a window. The whole top of the tower was covered by the 17th Century.
Dick Turpin was a legendary bandit highwayman robbing people on the roads of England in the early 18th Century. He is remembered as a man of the people robbing rich travelers of their jewels and valuables using the famous phrase “Stand and Deliver”. The truth however is less romantic. He was born in Essex in north east London and he joined a violent gang of horse thieves. When the rest of them were arrested he became a Highwayman. He shot a man to death in Epping Forest and fled to Yorkshire. He was caught and locked up in York Jail, what is now York Castle Museum. Find out more on our tour.
